3 years and countless rewards: My time on the Future Leaders Programme

My name is Nelson and I am a graduate on GSK’s Future Leaders Programme (Commercial Management, Consumer Healthcare) in Malaysia. I am a member of the first cohort of FLP graduates since the programme was launched here in 2014 and will be graduating into a management role in next couple of months.

Time flies and looking back now on how I got shortlisted and selected to join GSK’s family, it seems just like a dream! Actually, it was one of the most unforgettable moments in my life and one I’ll always be proud of.

Just like many other university graduates out there trying to secure a first job, I had a clear intention in mind to pursue my career in the healthcare industry. I started my job search on various job websites. It was here that one thing attracted me to submit my CV to GSK: The tag line: “do more, feel better, live longer.”

The GSK tagline resonated with me because it highlighted a commitment to treat customers as its first priority and embed ‘respect for people’ as one of its core values. I believe healthcare is a sustainable industry with an important purpose, which fits with my own passion to make the world a better place.

My life since joining GSK has been absolutely fascinating. It has been a journey that has excited me in every single rotation. It has also opened doors for me to learn, given me responsibility and the chance to grow in very different ways. As graduates, we’re given opportunities to take on new initiatives and propose new ideas to the company.

In my first year, I was assigned to the marketing team as a marketing associate and given full ownership of one of the top GSK brands, Sensodyne. It was a pretty hands-on role as I ran a number of marketing campaigns with the support of my line manager. It felt amazing to be empowered to drive campaigns, innovation and brand growth.

I gained a lot of knowledge from colleagues in the marketing department not only in running a great campaign, but more importantly in playing a role in helping those who suffer from sensitive teeth to enjoy their food!

In my second rotation, Sales, I was tasked to revive the Out-of-Home channel (also known as the catering channel). What really appealed to me about this rotation was that it offered a dynamic and challenging experience. Dealing with distributors was a great learning experience, improving both my networking and communication skills immensely.

And now, on my final rotation, I’m in a managerial role as an acting Trade Marketing Manager for our “Total Nutrition” category. I’m now not only responsible for business success but am learning how to coach and empower my team to continuously develop as well. My goal is to be a good leader who lives great values and inspires others to do the same.
