"Working in the field directly with our customers I’m able to see first hand how we enable people to “Do more, feel better, live longer”. It’s always inspiring when a doctor tells you how much your products have improved the lives of their patients. I’ve also had experiences of waiting in offices and a patient will see my products and come up to tell me how our products have helped them breathe better. That’s how I know GSK is living up to its promise."

I first heard about the Future Leaders Programme when I interned for GSK while pursuing my degree in Marketing at Temple University in Philadelphia. I liked the idea that I could gain experience through rotations in both the sales and marketing areas of the business, while also developing my leadership skills. It sounded right up my alley.

Right now, I’m one year into my sales rotation on the programme. It’s been an invaluable learning experience so far. I moved from Philadelphia to work on the Asthma team in New York. I’ve had the opportunity to promote established brands, Advair and Flovent, and also our new launch brands, Arnuity and Breo for asthma, which many sales professionals never get to experience in their careers.

I have always been shy and this role has allowed me to step out of my shell. Everyday I’ve had to go out in the field, be confident about what I am talking about and have meaningful conversations with doctors and office staff. I have become more comfortable asking for things as opposed to waiting for opportunities to come to me.

This approach has encouraged me to learn as much as I can and take on more leadership positions. I’m currently the Compliance Champion and Breo lead for my team. I’ve had development opportunities within the Future Leaders Programme through Personal Skills, Personal Resilience and Fundamentals of Delivery courses. We’ve also had the opportunity to network with senior leaders in the company through Future Leaders networking sessions.

For me, the best part of the programme is the focus on our development. We go through courses where we gain skills to help in our personal and professional development. There is also a large focus on our overall development through on-the-job experiences, relationships and formal training. I feel as though this programme is really shaping us to become leaders in the organisation.
